Repaský urges swift action on extreme weather events

During the 162nd CoR plenary session debate on recent extreme weather events exacerbated by the climate crisis, Miloslav Repaský, Member of the Regional Parliament of the Prešov Self-Governing Region in Slovakia and the European Alliance Group’s NAT commission coordinator, addressed the increasing frequency and severity of floods. Repaský highlighted the troubling rise in extreme weather events, noting that climate science links these to rising global temperatures.

He pointed out the severe impacts on communities, with recent catastrophic floods in Central Europe displacing thousands and damaging infrastructure. “We need to express solidarity with the citizens from the countries that experienced catastrophic floods in recent months. It’s time we act with seriousness and speed up the use of relevant EU resources,” he said.

Repaský emphasised that these floods are not just natural disasters, but are exacerbated by human actions such as burning fossil fuels and deforestation. He called for urgent action, urging governments, businesses, and individuals to adopt renewable energy, invest in resilient infrastructure, and protect natural ecosystems.

Repaský concluded by stressing that the climate crisis is already here, and immediate action is needed to mitigate its effects and protect future generations
