SEDEC Adopts McDonnell’s Opinion on Improving Access to Social Services
At its meeting on 1 October, the SEDEC Commission adopted the draft opinion “Addressing territorial inequalities by improving access to social services,” presented by Cllr Declan McDonnell of Galway City Council, Ireland. The opinion focuses on enhancing access to essential social services such as healthcare, education, and housing.
McDonnell’s report identifies several key challenges, including disparities in the availability and accessibility of services across different regions, a shortage of skilled professionals leading to gaps in mental health services, and financial constraints that hinder service delivery. To tackle these issues, the opinion proposes several strategies.
McDonnell highlights the importance of integrated regional development strategies, targeted investments, and improvements to digital infrastructure, especially in underserved areas. The opinion also calls for innovative fiscal policies, enhanced service delivery models, and the effective use of EU funds to promote social inclusion and reduce inequalities across the EU.
The SEDEC Commission adopted the opinion by a majority vote. It will next be debated at the November plenary session of the Committee of the Regions.
